Dembo Fixer
b. 1978, Kafountine, Senegal

Dembo has spent his life in Kafountine where you can find him at his place by the beach where he uses traditional methods to dye cloth. He is also active as an actor and dancer and can be seen performing each year at the carnival with his group 'Djanabantang'.

Before the wedding

Before her wedding, the bride is having her hair plaited (baramon). Every woman about to get married will have this done by a special person who will accompany the bride for a week prior to the wedding and help in her preparations.

Women working in the rice fields

The women in this print are busy gathering the rice at harvest time. It shows one woman cutting the rice whilst the other two are making bundles and carrying these away before the rice stalks are beaten to extract the rice.

This is a symbolic image based upon the idea that after the forest or bush has been burned, it is reborn. In this print, instead of the new growth of plants and trees, we see people embracing as they start a new and happy life.

The kora is a traditional instrument from West Africa. In this print we see a Jali - a musician, praise singer - playing and singing traditional songs whilst the people celebrate by dancing. This scene would be typical of events such as a naming ceremony or a wedding.

Boune is one of the islands in the mangrove area to the south of Kafountine. The area is famous for the variety of migratory birds along with the main crops grown on Boune, coconuts and marijuana.

This character is also known as the Bossman. During the Koumpo programme that happens every Friday and Monday in the village, the Esamay walks around and points to people with his stick  to make them dance. People are afraid of him so they do as he tells them.
